Our Midwifery Internship is for students aspiring to kickstart their career with working experience in a developing country. You will be placed in a reputed Government Hospital in Kandy where you will get vast exposure to the local medical system and its clinical methods.

As an intern, you will be placed in a teaching hospital under the supervision of the Specialist in charge of the midwifery department. You will be observing/shadowing the specialist with minimum hands-on experience (hands on experience will be decided by the specialist in charge).

Start Dates & Minimum Duration

This Internship program runs all year round and starts every Monday. However, we recommend arriving on the Sunday to check into your accommodation and prepare for your program to start the following morning.

 

Please note that program start dates could be affected by local holidays. However, we will give you as much notice as possible if any days of your program may overlap with holidays.

 

The minimum duration of this Internship is 4 weeks, please contact us if you would like to volunteer for longer.

What are the requirements to take part in this program?

Internship Requirements:

  • Age limit: 18-65
  • Proof of DBS check required
  • Proof of travel insurance required
  • Passport copy required
  • Copy of Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Academic qualifications in the field
  • An established background in an affiliated field of study

 

An email with the following documents must be emailed to us at least 4 weeks prior to your internship:

  • CV including qualifications
  • A reference letter authorised by your university/institute that you are currently working/studying at
  • Motivation letter including learning goals, expectations and specific placement requests
  • Copies of certificates of qualifications and academic transcripts
  • University Insurance Certificate

Internships will require an interview with the local team.

Schedule & Working Hours

This program runs for a minimum of 4 weeks, starting on a Monday. During the first week of the program, you will be briefed with an introduction to our program. During the first 3 days of the week, you will get a thorough understanding of the Dos, Don’ts and the culture in Sri Lanka. This program is not only career-focused, but also designed to give you the essence of all the best things about this magnificent and culturally rich country. Getting to know about the proud history and the places that boast about Sri Lankan heritage, is a part of this week and we make sure that experience will make you fall in love with Sri Lanka.

 

From Thursday to Friday on your first week, you will receive an academic introduction session before the internship. During these sessions, a professional supervisor will educate you about the local situation and developments surrounding the industry/field in which the internship takes place and prepares you for the local work environment/culture.

 

After breakfast, you will leave for the project to start your day’s work in the midwifery department of the hospital. You will have a daily work schedule fixed for your work sessions and observation sessions to be followed during your internship.

 

Your schedule also includes:

  • Welcome, introduction to Sri Lanka and projects, House rules, Code of Conduct and handling of documents
  • Sinhalese Language Lesson
  • Cultural Lesson
  • Kandy City Tour

Accommodation Details

You will be accommodated in one of our centres which are located 2-4 kilometres away from Kandy centre. There is a refrigerator which you are welcome to use to store food and drinks.

 

Standard rooms will be shared with 4-10 other participants and you will also have a shared bathroom.

What meals are included?

3 meals per day during weekdays and 2 meals per day on weekends are included. Meals will be a mix of delicious Sri Lankan and Western cuisine and will be mainly vegetarian dishes, including rice and vegetables. You can also eat out at any of the local restaurants. Water, tea, coffee & milk are also included.

What can I do in my free time?

Places to visit during your weekends or free time are the Royal Botanical Gardens, Knuckles mountain range, Udawattakele sanctuary, Hortons plains national park and the railway museum.

  • The house is located 2 kilometres away from the city centre, where you can find anything you might need. The nearest ATM and supermarket are a 15-minute walk away from our accommodation.

Airport Pickup

An airport pick up is included on Sundays between 05:00-21:00. We recommend booking your flights to arrive during this pickup window.

 

If you're unable to make the pickup window, please contact us to let us know that you can make your own way to us, or arrange an additional pickup at an extra cost.

 

The arrival airport is CMB (Bandaranayake International Airport). The drive to your accommodation from the airport is around 3-4 hours.
